Photograph of My Wife?

Dear Sir,

I have been scouring your fabulous blog, and correct me if I have missed it, but there is a rumor that your wife has a photograph of her, circulating about the internet. What do you know about it?

Merci,
Lauren

Mademoiselle!

You may be referring to the following likeness. I, however cannot attest to its authenticity, for by that I time I was... away!

Your servant,
WAM

Some scholars, including the editors of the Grove Dictionary, judge that a surviving photographic image from the mid 19th century includes the 78-year-old Constanze Mozart. The picture was supposedly taken in Altötting in Bavaria in 1840. Not all Mozart scholars endorse this view, however. For instance, it is claimed that the picture was taken with a short exposure that, for technical reasons, was not yet possible in 1840. Other scholars claim that Constanze could not have traveled to visit Maximillian Keller during the period when the photograph was taken, as she suffered from crippling arthritis at the time.

I don't think the photograph is authentic. The painting is pretty though:)

Ah, an enigma is it? It is difficult to surpass, in mine own mind, a puzzle such as this. Mystery is the very stuff that life is made of!

Upon closer examination, there are some striking similarities in the shape of the nose and face itself. It is difficult to tell through the eyes for a number of reasons, the artistic license taken by the painter of the younger portrait, as well as the inability to see the eyes with any clarity in the older portrait.

The eyes are the windows to the soul, it is said... but alas, I fear we will not catch any glimpses here.
